What is a Community of Practice?

The term "Community of Practice" was coined by Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger in 1991 to describe groups of people who come together to deepen their learning and knowledge by interacting, sharing and relating with each other.

CoP's, as they are known, actually have less to do with "practice" and more to do with "learning". Instead of getting their knowledge from books in the library or a lecturer at the front of a packed lecture theatre, participants are acquiring and creating knowledge with their peers and colleagues. In a way the community of practice acts as a living curriculum for its participants.

The idea of "communities of practice" is growing in popularity both inside organizations and formal learning centres as people slowly start to shift their thinking around learning. One of the most common images of a "learner" is of a person sitting at a desk inside a classroom. This image suggests that learning is done by the individual and in a formal, structured environment. Now, anyone who has been to university or college knows that the learning doesn't stop in the lecture theatre, it continues as you discuss with your classmates down at the student cafe or kiosk. It happens when you share notes and resources with your buddies and it happens when you engage in long debates over a beer or a meal.

"From this perspective, the school is not the privileged locus of learning. It is not a self-contained, closed world in which students acquire knowledge to be applied outside, but a part of a broader learning system. The class is not the primary learning event. It is life itself that is the main learning event. Schools, classrooms, and training sessions still have a role to play in this vision, but they have to be in the service of the learning that happens in the world." (Etienne Wenger, http://www.ewenger.com)

Learning is, amongst other things, a very social act.

The CoP's at ICA are more than just groups of people who share a common interest (like going to the movies). They are groups of practitioners who are committed to a particular field or specialist area of coaching and share a certain level of competence in that area.

When you enrol you select a CoP to belong to and immediately start connecting with your new global network of coaches.
